The Power Trail

The Power trail to launch May 2025. Power Trail Website, contains all resources for the trail and ESTEM learning materials: [ Power Trail – Lanark’s Power Trail] Power Trail follows the heritage story of hydro power at New Lanark and the Falls of Clyde. In following the trail, visitors discover how advances in technology have supported and generated centuries of sustainable, renewable energy within a spectacular environment. The trail covers three broad themes: -Heritage: 250 years of water-powered technology at New Lanark, from waterwheels to electricity-generating turbines. -Environment: The Scottish Wildlife Trust manages and monitors the nature reserve for the benefit of its biodiversity. -Hydro-electricity: A 20th and 21st century story of hydro power at the site of one of the country’s first hydro-electric power stations for public supply.

Project Timeline

2022

Power trail project is proposed in the Vision for Lanark.

2023

March – funding for the project acquired.
June – CMC Associates are appointed as lead contractor commencing work July 2023.

2023 - 2024

July 2023 – March 2024
Collection of information from steering group members and site visits to plan positioning of signs. Panels for the trail enter design phase, with CMC Associates. Planning begins for producing the supporting educational materials.

2024

September – Steering group members approve the designs submitted by CMC Associates.
Signs move into fabrication stage.

2024

November – Installation of the Power Trail panels on relevant sites.

2025

January – Power trail officially launched
March – STEM resources are uploaded for use by visiting school groups.
May – The Trail is launched
June- The ESTEM learning resources are launched.
