Castlebank Park

Castlebank Park in Lanark is one of Scotland’s 71 Green Flag Parks. Free to visit, the park is open to the public all year and is very popular with families, dog walkers and nature enthusiasts. The park features beautiful garden areas, a Wildflower & Tree Trail, picnic benches, children’s play area and Horticulture Centre. The park is situated near the former site of Lanark Castle where the Sheriff of Lanark was slain by William Wallace in revenge for the murder of Marion Braidfute in 1297.

Castlebank Horticultural Centre

At Castlebank Horticultural Centre, we strive to promote the principles of inclusivity for all, respect for the environment and all living things within it, expanding our knowledge about the natural world, and promoting the physical and mental health benefits of adopting a balanced lifestyle through engagement with the natural world around us.

The first phase of Castlebank Horticultural Centre, the growing compound opened in May 2014. The second phase, the Community Hub, opened in November 2018 and is now home to a full-time Educational Gardener and a year-long programme of educational activities, volunteering opportunities and community events.

Rooms at the centre are also available for hire for business, community and personal lets. Visit our room hire page for more information.

The centre is managed by Lanark Community Development Trust. Proceeds from the centre’s activities and hires are returned to the Development Trust to reinvest in the centre, and the ongoing development and maintenance of the Castlebank Park gardens. Castlebank Park restoration project funders to date have included: Climate Challenge Fund, LEADER, The Renewable Energy Fund, The National Lottery Community Fund, Levenseat Trust, Tesco Bags for Help, The Stafford Trust, Border Biscuits, Grow Wild, Action Earth Volunteering Matters (Scottish Natural Heritage), The Scottish Government Community Growing Fund, SCOTMID and The Royal Burgh of Lanark Community Council.

Getting Here

In Lanark, Castlebank Horticultural Centre is located within the historic area of Castlebank Park in the south of the town.

Car: Lanark is located around 50 minutes from Glasgow and Edinburgh by car. 

Train: The nearest train station to the centre is ‘Lanark’ which has a direct connection to Motherwell/ Glasgow Central. The station is around a 20-minute walk from the centre or a short taxi journey.

Bus: There is a bus service between Buchanan Bus Station in Glasgow and Lanark. Details of this service are available by calling Stuart’s Coaches on 01555 773533. Does not run on Sundays.

Parking: The main car park at Castlebank Park is located around a 5-minute walk from the centre either up St Patrick’s Road or along a path within the park. The most accessible route is along St Patrick’s road which is paved.  There is also a bike rack directly outside the centre. There are 3 disabled spaces directly outside the centre, primarily for Blue Badge holders or visitors with limited mobility.
