As part of the ‘Lanark Vision’ Development strategy, we want to make the most of Lanark’s scenic and historic location by enhancing and promoting local walks and cycling routes. With thanks to Eleanor McLean, Board Member of the Development Trust, two trails have been developed to date to highlight key aspects of Lanark’s hertiage. These trails are available by clicking on the images below, or physical copies can be picked up in The Tolbooth.

The Wallace Trail

From tales of romance at St Kentigern’s Church to drawing his sword at Lanark Castle, follow in ‘the footsteps of William Wallace’ in this trail which leads you through Wallace’s early life in Lanark, pointing out key historical milestones and landmarks along the way.

The Heritage Trail

Step back in time and enjoy a walking tour around the historic market town of Lanark. You will not only come across lovely old buildings of architectural interest, discover the development of the town throughout the years, but uncover some of Lanark’s hidden treasures.

Other local organisations are also promoting walking in the local area, such as Healthy Valleys who run two weekly ‘Health Walks’ and Lanark Library who run guided historical tours.

Lanark Community Walks Project

The Development Trust are currently working in partnership with The Rotary Club of Lanark on the ‘Lanark Community Walks’ project. We’re looking to create a new booklet which compiles a list of local walks, some taken from a plethora of historic publications and leaflets like these below! The idea is to categorise the walks by distance & time, allowing locals and visitors to select the most suitable walks for themselves. There is also the idea to incorporate new walks which showcase different areas of Lanark at different times of year, for example a ‘Lanimer walk’ or an ‘Autumn Glory’ walk.
