Long before the pandemic began to upset our lives earlier this year, the Lanark Community Development Trust, New Lanark Trust and Discover Lanark joined forces to commission a report from CMC Associates on how best to realise far greater benefits for the town and its surroundings from our much loved, but often underestimated, natural and cultural heritage. The report was sponsored by Border Biscuits Community Support and the three partners have also recently been joined by the Scottish Wildlife Trust.

The report confirms that the national and internationally important natural and cultural heritage in and around Lanark, including two conservation areas, a world heritage site, a national nature reserve, are fundamental to making Lanark special to our community and our visitors. However, in recent years, our own expectations of this special place and our visitors’ experience have been found wanting. This has been the cause of great frustration when our heritage should be the foundation of an integrated, jointly marketed, vibrant experience economy in and around Lanark. The report points towards the potential strengths of our heritage assets for community identity and wellbeing as well as for business. But it also points to the weaknesses in the area’s physical and organisational infrastructure in order to capitalise on these.

The report sets out broad themes for future development and the recognition of the vital role that an enhanced arrival hub for the town would perform. We must also consider how to embrace the government green agenda, for instance for sustainable energy. Tourism development must address sustainability and a much-improved transport infrastructure that will make this possible.

FORTHCOMING PUBLIC CONSULTATION

We are fully committed to community consultation on the preparation of the plans that will make a difference to Lanark, New Lanark and the Falls of Clyde. We cannot wait for the virus to abate, so without public meetings we are embarking on a staged consultation process. We will be consulting with community groups over the next few weeks and these will pave the way for a wider public consultation. Please watch this space for further developments and information on how you can contribute to the debate.
