Castlebank Horticultural Centre will be hosting a virtual programme of activity over the summer holidays
Castlebank Horticultural Centre in Lanark operates as a social enterprise by Lanark Community Development Trust. The centre hosts an annual programme of volunteering opportunities, educational visits, workshops, fundraising events and training courses. Currently employed is an Educational Gardener, funded on a 3-year basis by The National Lottery Community Fund Scotland.
As part of the centre’s efforts to engage local young families in learning about the natural environment and gardening, a ‘Family Gardening Club’ was launched in summer 2019. This was very popular, and was extended into all public school holidays such as the September Weekend and October Week. Due to COVID-19, the Easter 2020 clubs had to be cancelled and due to the ongoing pandemic, the scheduled summer 2020 programme was unable to start as normal. Thanks to funding from The Rotary Club of Lanark, the centre has launched a virtual Summer Family Gardening and Nature Club.
Sessions will take place each Friday of the summer holidays at 10.30am via ZOOM. Each week will have a different nature or gardening theme – from bugs and birds, to growing veggies, fantastic flowers and wriggly worms! There will be a weekly video with Stuart the Educational Gardener and a weekly activity pack with 8-10 themed activities the family can enjoy for the rest of that week at home, in the garden or out walking.
To participate in the sessions, please join the new Facebook group where all updates will be posted. The sessions are free (thanks to funding mentioned above) and there is no registration required. If families can’t make the 10.30am live time, they can watch the video and download the activity pack at any time from the Facebook group.
